Data Processing Executive - Trainee Programmer - June 1981 to June 1982

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Writing new COBOL and Usercode modules for programs run under the ICL System 4 operating system for the Yellow Pages operation of the Post Office (subsequently British Telecom).
  • Performing systems and programming work for maintaining  and enhancing existing programs for the Yellow Pages advertisement order processing suite.

 

Data Processing Executive - Programmer - June 1982 to November 1983

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Converting and testing the Yellow Pages software following a move from the ICL System 4 to the ICL VME operating system.
  • Writing the System Control Language (SCL) procedures to run the converted software under VME.
  • Providing on-site and call-out support  for the implementation of the converted software at the mainframe computer centre.

 

Data Processing Executive - Systems Analyst - November 1983 to November 1984

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performing the feasibility study, design, specification, testing, and implementation of a system for creating, batch updating and on-line interrogating and updating the Yellow Pages Business database.

 

Local Communications Services - Computer Management Support Consultant - November 1984 to February 1987

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Advising the BT Internal Audit group on technical issues during computer installation audits and the audit of BT's ICL Operational Support group, including writing a guide to the VME operating system.
  • Participating in studies about the control of software support groups, the use of Checksum to ensure the integrity of live ICL/VME programs, and the implications of the Data Protection Act 1984.
  • Producing checklists for computer centre managers to use to check their operational readiness for internal audit reviews. 

 

Local Communications Services - Computer Performance Management Consultant - February 1987 to February 1988

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performing performance evaluation and capacity planning reviews of the mainframe operations at various BT computer centres.  These reviews were performed using proprietary software to capture and statistically analyse mainframe and computer peripheral activities.

 

Other activities within BT - June 1981 to February 1988

  • Member of the BT Brunel House team entered in the Scotsman Management Game in 1982.

  • Secretary to the Working Party meetings between the Section, the Computer Centre, and the customer.

  • Section Communications and Equipment officer.

  • Member of the Civil Service Sports Council and the national Civil Service Women's Cricket team and the Brunel House's Men's team.

 

External activities whilst I was employed by BT

  • Member of the Women's Royal Naval Reserve (WRNR) from 1978 to 1984.  I achieved the rank of Leading Wren Radio Operator (technically qualified for Petty Officer Wren Radio Supervisor) and I was at different times Mess Vice-President and Mess Treasurer and a member of the Ship's Welfare Committee.

  • Member of Cardiff Ladies Cricket team and the Women's Cricket Association.  Other sporting activities included orienteering, squash, and badminton.
