Apex Beat  - June 1994 to Present

On 14 January 1992, whilst I was participating in a Price Waterhouse training course, I had an accident that fractured five of my vertebrae and two ribs.  Since my accident I have had two operations on my spine and extensive physiotherapy and rehabilitation.  In addition to returning to a reasonable level of fitness, I have kept my skills up to date by setting up a home network running Windows 2000 Server on the server computer and Windows 2000 Professional on the client computer.

I have computerised my physiotherapist’s practice, including the specification and selection of hardware and software and the implementation of accounting software and a patient database.  I have also computerised the accounting function of a retail jeweller, including the automatic preparation of the quarterly VAT returns.  I have designed, built, and I now maintain web sites for a friend who lets his house in Brittany (La Maison Blanche) and for another friend who is an accountant (P M Humphreys & Co).

I have recently completed the Java I, II, and III courses at Cardiff University (2001-02).  Currently, I am enrolled on the University's Creative Web Design I course, and I intend to take the Creative Web Design II and III courses in the spring and summer of 2003.

Project management.  For a large solicitors’ practice: implementation of an IT strategy for Office Automation.  For an international firm of exhibition organisers: implementation of financial software.  For a regional newspaper group: specification, selection, and contract negotiation for the procurement of hardware and software for accounting, advertisement booking, marketing, and management information.  For a Water Company: specification of users’ requirements and the design for a customer accounting system with direct control for a budget of £500,000 and 600 staff days.

Chartered Trust - February 1988 to April 1989

In February 1988, I joined Chartered Trust as Systems Assurance Manager.  I created, defined, and managed the Systems Assurance function recruiting a team of four staff with a budget of £300,000 p.a.  The Systems Assurance team ensured that technology strategies were defined in line with the needs of the business; that computerised systems were specified, developed, documented, and operated to the highest standards; that systems were developed within budget and timescale and performed to the users’ requirements; and that systems were developed, maintained, and operated in a secure environment.

In October 1988, I became the Business Audit Manager responsible for managing the Head Office and Group Subsidiaries function of Internal Audit to ensure: the effectiveness of internal controls; the accuracy and completeness of accounting records; the efficiency of administrative procedures; and adherence to company policies and procedures and compliance with statutory requirements.

British Telecom - June 1981 to February 1988

On 23 June 1981, I joined the Post Office as a Trainee Programmer in the Data Processing Executive.  I was promoted to Programmer on 23 June 1982.  From June 1981 to November 1984, I was employed in the Yellow Pages section of the Post Office, subsequently British Telecom (BT).  I gained systems analysis and programming experience in all parts of the systems development life cycle from the initial feasibility study through to maintenance and enhancement of the live system.

On promotion in November 1984, I joined the Technical Audit Management Group.  This was a new team that provided a liaison between BT’s mainframe Computer Centres’ Management and the Internal Auditors who assured the integrity of the company’s data.  In February 1987, I joined the Computer Performance Management Group.  This team provided a capacity planning and performance management consultancy service to all BT’s mainframe computer centres.
